Sonifex Courier - Product Information

Courier

The Sonifex Courier Portable Recorder is compatible with GSM mobile telephones and ISDN.

Sonifex Courier - GSM Mobile Telephone Compatibility

There are currently four models of telephone which can be used for connection of the Courier to a GSM network. These telephones contain an internal modem so that the Courier can send serial data to them directly. The phone will need to have a lead that connects to a nine pin D plug, that supports a normal RS232 protocol and can fully implement the modem code within the phone.

Compatible telephones are:

  • Alcatel "One Touch Pocket"
  • Sagem RC850
  • Siemens S25
  • Nokia 7110
We have tested the Courier with the Alcatel "One Touch Pocket" phone and can recommend it. The others haven't been tested, but should operate theoretically.

The Ericsson SH888 regrettably simulates a Infra-red link on the serial cable and is NOT compatible.

Unfortunately, at present, we're unable to use any other types of telephone, that we're aware of.

Sonifex Courier -CO-ISDN ISDN Version -
The Outside Broadcast Van In A Box!

The ISDN version of the Courier provides you with all the features and benefits of the standard Courier but brings it up to the level of a portable ISDN codec. You can either carry out a live broadcast, or use the Courier as an ISDN modem to send your audio back to the studio as data.

For live audio, mpeg layer 2 compression is used to send and receive audio over a single 64 kb/sec circuit. As standard you can use the left mic/line input to broadcast, or you can play back cuts from the disk.

Audio can be sampled at either 24kHz or 48kHz and there is an option to mix both the inputs to mono before sending. There is a send and return level indicator and levels can be adjusted using the record level knob and the headphone volume adjustment, with the return feed being sent to the headphones. Courier is compatible with CCS CDQ Prima & CDQ1000, Telos Zephyr, Dialog 4 MusicTaxi and Prodys Pronto 2 codecs.

Using the Courier as an ISDN modem, you can connect directly to an ISDN line and send data files back to your studio using the z-modem protocol.

There are two types of ISDN option available :

  • CO-ISDN-S version uses the Euro-ISDN protocol and is used in Europe and Asia.
  • CO-ISDN-U version uses the AT&T, Bellcore and DMS100 protocols and is for use in the USA and Canada. A CO-ISDN-S unit can be used in the USA with a separate NT1 adapter.
Also a standard Courier can be upgraded to an ISDN version - contact Sonifex for further information.

Any codec that can receive mpeg layer 2 compressed audio, sampled at 24kHz, or 48kHz, with bit rate of 64kbps should work correctly with the Courier.

Compatible CODECS are:

  • Telos Zephyr 9100, 9200, 9202, and 9102 (with firmware version 2.69 or 2.70, or later)
  • Prodys Pronto 2
  • CCS CDQ Prima

Any codecs which support APT-X only can unfortunately not be supported.
